The term Unicorn was coined by Aileen Lee in 2013 to define a privately-held startup with a value of over $1 billion. Originally used because of the rarity of finding such a company, there are now over 300 unicorns globally, including over 20 in Israel – the most unicorns per capita in the world! Riskified reached Unicorn status in November 2019 with a $165 million series E round valuing the company at over $1 billion!

Payoneer is one of Israel’s older unicorns, earning the prestigious title in 2017. It is also one of Israel’s biggest and most successful hi-tech companies, with revenue of $200MM+ in 2017. Founded in 2005, they operate one of the largest online money transfer platforms in the world.
