“Maybe I see myself, or maybe I see the purity that children can emotionally express that I seem to have lost at times in my own life. As we get older, and become aware of people’s expectations on ourselves, both from our family, society, and culture, we begin to lose our connection to our true selves, like an onion’s layers slowly peeled away, and eventually become the expectations everyone had wished upon us. We lose our pure connection with our emotions.

In this work, I feel that I was able to capture these Moroccan children in Marrakesh, these young children boxing and competing for their lives and dignity, struggling with their internal challenges of becoming men in Morocco, to fight for their lives, to fight for their individualism, their pride, their ego, their position in life, while all on display as entertainment for the crowd, using them as props to avoid their own internal struggles of figuring out what it means to be yourself in this world”
