Sally Krystal’s works are exceptional in the field of Israeli art and are characterized by an attitude of foreignness and distance towards him. As the daughter of French immigrants who immigrated to Israel as children, the French language and culture are engraved in her soul. This has a clear expression in her work, from the world of her images, her work practices, to the names she gives to her works. A central and prominent feature of Crystal’s works is the blurring of the accepted boundaries between art and craft. These are two close fields of art, but in contemporary Israeli art they are perceived as opposites and even as threatening to each other.
The world of content in this exhibition and in many of its works is the “domestic” that quickly becomes “non-domestic”: the alien, the threatening and the repulsive. The works on display in the exhibition create a kind of homely, feminine, yet morbid and ironic environment.
A refined duvet made of treated parchment and a parchment pillow from which feathers burst out suggests a nightmare rather than a sweet sleep (Bonne nuit “good night”). The round “clock” whose literature is embroidered skulls smiling, and after all skulls are always smiling, (La Dance des Demons “Dance of the Demons”), is cheerful and grave. Large canvases look like walls in which embroidered mold spreads, (Trop d’humidite “too much moisture”), and on the floor flat rounded shapes, red as bloodstains and the smell of vinegar and rot rising from them. Residues and membranes of bacterial pulp formed in a traditional domestic process of fermentation and distillation of wine vinegar. (Vinaigre “vinegar”).
A work that looks like a piece of jewelry that has become a cancerous, independent and organic creature whose extensions branch and spread into itself and on the wall, was inspired by the phenomenon of “mycelium” (Mycelium): an underground, potentially infinite subterranean. In soil and organic materials, alluded to in the name of the exhibition – “Basement”. Between the beautiful and the repulsive, between the domestic and the threatening, between the feminine and the masculine, between “here” and “there”.

עבודותיה של סלי קריסטל יוצאות דופן בשדה האמנות הישראלי ומתאפיינות ביחס של זרות וריחוק כלפיו. כבת של עולים מצרפת שהיגרו לישראל בילדותה, השפה והתרבות הצרפתית חקוקות בנפשה. יש לכך ביטוי ברור ביצירתה, החל בעולם הדימויים שלה, בפרקטיקות העבודה שלה, וכלה בשמות שהיא נותנת לעבודותיה. מאפיין מרכזי ובולט בעבודותיה של קריסטל הוא טשטוש הגבולות המקובלים בין אמנות (ארט) ואומנות (קראפט). אלו שני תחומי יצירה קרובים, אך באמנות הישראלית העכשווית הם נתפסים כמנוגדים ואפילו כמאיימים זה על זה.
עולם התוכן בתערוכה זו וברבות מעבודותיה הוא ה”ביתי” ההופך במהרה ל”אל-ביתי”: הזר, המאיים והדוחה. העבודות המוצגות בתערוכה מייצרות מעין סביבה ביתית, נשית, ועם זאת מורבידית ואירונית.
שמיכת פוך מעודנת עשויה פרגמנט מטופל וכרית פרגמנט שנוצות מתפרצות ממנה מרמזות על סיוט יותר מאשר על שינה מתוקה (Bonne nuit “לילה טוב”). ה”שעון” העגול שספרותיו גולגלות רקומות מחייכות, והרי גולגלות תמיד מחייכות, (La Dance des Demons “מחול השדים”), הוא עליז ומקברי. בדי ציור גדולים נראים כקירות שעובש רקום מתפשט בהם, ( Trop d’humidite “יותר מידי לחות”), ועל הרצפה צורות שטוחות מעוגלות, אדומות ככתמי דם שריח של חומץ ורקבון עולה מהן. שאריות וקרומים של עיסת חיידקים שנוצרה בתהליך ביתי מסורתי של תסיסה וזיקוק של חומץ בן יין. (Vinaigre “חומץ”).
עבודה הנראית כמו תכשיט שהפך ליצור סרטני, עצמאי ואורגני ששלוחותיו מסתעפות ומתפשטות אל תוך עצמו ועל הקיר, נעשתה בהשראת תופעת ה”תפטיר” )Mycelium(: התפשטות תת קרקעית, אין סופית בפוטנציה. עולם תחתון, אפל וסמוי מן העין, של קורים שפטריות שולחות באדמה ובחומרים אורגנים, מרומז בשם התערוכה – “מרתף”. המהלך העקשני, המתוחכם והמעודן המאפיין את עבודותיה של סלי מאתגר קונבציות, ניגודים ומתחים בשדה האמנות, ניגודים ומתחים תרבותיים וחברתיים – בין אמנות לאומנות, בין מותר לאסור, בין גבוה לנמוך, בין מרכזי לשולי, בין היפה לדוחה, בין הביתי למאיים, בין הנשי לגברי , בין “כאן” ל”שם”.
