On February 22, join TINAU and First Hand Films for a screening of Jaffa: A Guide to Gentrification by Keren Shayo & Lavi Vanounou. This screening has been made possible by First Hand Films, an award-winning international sales company, producer, and distributor based in Zurich, Switzerland. The film will have English subtitles.

Gentrification is a form of economic violence that has swept through Tel Aviv and had particularly devastating impacts on longtime residents of Yaffa, particularly Palestinian-Arab residents. Addressed through an intersectional lens, this film follows the personal struggle of the veteran residents against the threat of eviction orders and reveals the metamorphosis that the city is going through, uncovering both its social and deeply political meanings. Jaffa – A Guide to Gentrification shows all lovers of Yaffa the price paid for beauty, location, greed as well as the price paid in erasing the history of the Palestinian-Arab city through the eviction of its residents, businesses, and community strongholds.

We are honored to be joined by Osnat Trabelsi, the film’s producer, and Abed Abu-Shehadeh, a protagonist in the film & a local community organizer, member of Tel Aviv municipality & Yaffa local who gives excellent historical geo political tours- for a Q&A following the film screening.

Although there is no entrance fee, a lot of hard work goes into planning these movie nights! There is a suggested donation of 30 shekels, or whatever you can pay.

PS: Curious why Yaffa-Jaffa-Yafo has so many spellings and pronunciations? That too is political! Yaffa is the closest transliteration from Arabic, Jaffa the closest to English, and Yafo the closest to Hebrew. We chose to use Yaffa to honor the historical Arabic name.
