Enigmatic piles greet us at the entrance to Revital Lessickā€™s ‘Abandoned Streets’ exhibition, standing as warning signs heralding the horror within. Piles that, upon closer inspection, turn out to be burial mounds, a remnant of a mass murder. Passing through the black doors into the gallery space, we pass like Alice through the looking glass, into an upside-down world, plunged into darkness from a source of horror. A nightmarish and perverse world that has taken over familiar streets, leaving a mark of destruction and destruction. Crazy and monstrous characters roam the deserted streets, busy with the feverish activity of indulging dark passions and unburdening every burden. A single beam of light pierces the dark exhibition space, scans the streets and buildings like an accusing finger and is covered in a kind of improvised watchtower, perhaps to prevent the madness from spilling out and escaping from the prison of the subconscious. A majestic crane leads the guilty, it seems that he is the only one who can help in the darkness.
Animals are a significant and recurring motif in Lessickā€™s work, and serve a dual role: as predator or prey, as victim or savior. Lessick testifies that the narrative around which the body of works is woven is guilt, moving between guilt in a private and intimate sense and guilt in its deep cultural and collective contexts. “Who would I be if it weren’t for the guilt, the shame and the anxiety? Would I have participated with all my might in defeating instincts and evil, or would I have become a superhero and teamed up with powerful creatures that would bring light to the world?”
