In a new solo exhibition at Maya Gallery, Meir Sidi presents a series of embroidered portraits. These are vivid, colorful and “talking” portraits that look like selfies or alternatively passport photos. In the embroidered pictures made by an artist, his close friends appear and change, and they are in fact a social mapping of social, emotional and personal circles. An in-depth look at the portraits reveals the hidden side of the embroidery work, which indicates that they are much more than a formal copy, “more” a story on Instagram, and reveals the reflection of life experiences, fragments of memories, looks of living and dead people, sadness and joy, history and a sense of place. It is actually an embroidered geography of a person, a social and emotional geography of a rich and complex life story.
