Maya Gallery is pleased to present “Petunia”, the first solo exhibition by artist Tamara Strano. The exhibition consists of ceramic works, embroidery and drawing.
Strano uses images taken from plays and literary ballet adaptations in order to depict an emotional state in which passion, tension and distress are intertwined. Strano’s world is full of clowns, court girls, dolls and four-poster beds that are in the midst of various rituals, mannerisms and gestures. Courtship rituals, salutations and amusement are intermingled. Their object remains ambiguous and the gesture seems to mark only itself.
Strano takes on the archetypal image of a girl locked in a room in a family mansion, while the bachelors knock on her door, and instead of answering them positively or negatively, her libido is converted into laborious needlework. Strano’s drawing and painting works show the other side of inhibitions. They resemble fragments of dreamy-murky images, visions of the realization of a desire that is at the same time the thing that arouses the greatest anxiety, the terrible and longed-for moment when a body meets another body.
Similar to a traveling circus show, it seems that the exhibition could be packed in a suitcase and reopened in another place: a fair, a market, or a room of wonders. Strano uses the theatrical motifs to create an intimate and enigmatic emotional language. The disappearing figure at the center of Strano’s show refuses to meet the world, to surrender to it. Calling for help, she waves a handkerchief in front of a sealed window.
