“Novel Views on Visual Documentary Practices”:

Join us for an evening of exploring truth in documentary cinema and photography with Tel Aviv University Professor’s Ohad Landesman and Rona Cohen*.

Dr. Landesman’s lecture will briefly explore why and how has documentary filmmaking taken a primary position and privileged status within world cinema, both critically and commercially. Recognizing the ambiguities and complexities of a new ‘documentary truth’, free from burdening standards of objectivity and rationality, we will show how documentary cinema has been changing and developing in the 21st century.

Ohad Landesman is a Lecturer in Film Studies in the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television at Tel Aviv University and a Faculty Member in the Department of Visual and Material Culture at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. He holds a PhD from the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University, and his writing has appeared in several academic journals. He is the founder of DocTalk, a blog devoted entirely to critical writings on documentaries, and he is currently working on a book about documentary visits to Israel in the 1960s and 1970s.

Dr. Cohen will address the question of… In an age of ‘alternative facts’, when photographic images can be manipulated by anyone using a smartphone, can we still trust photography to provide us a record of our world? Or has the photographic image lost its claim to truth? How to live in a world where images produce hyper-reality rather than represent reality?

Dr. Rona Cohen, Academic Advisor to the International B.A. in Liberal Arts Program at Tel Aviv University, is also a doctor of philosophy specializing in aesthetics in the continental tradition of philosophy and teaches as well in the School of Dance at Kibbutzim College.

Tel Aviv University International together with the Tel Aviv Yafo Municipal Department of Immigration Absorption, with the support of the Ministry of Aliya and Integration, presents a series of FREE talks to bring you current academic topics relevant for your everyday lives, in a fun and casual setting.
