About Our Tour: Neve Tzedek

The Neve Tzedek neighborhood was established in 1887, before Tel Aviv itself. It was founded by a group of Jewish families seeking to move outside of the overcrowded city of Yafo. Residents preferred to build the new quarter with low-rise buildings along narrow streets with the houses often incorporating design elements from international art movements . Shortly after it was created, a train station was built nearby, connecting Yafo and Jerusalem, bringing in a boost of commerce and culture to the area. Over the years, Tel Aviv expanded north, but modern architecture skipped the old Neve Tzedek neighborhood, leaving it with incredible charm. The community is full of history including a beautiful array of synagogues, and houses of note from some of Zionism’s leading early figures including Rav Kook, Shai Agnon and artist Nahum Gutman.

About Our Speaker: Deputy Mayor Haim Goren

Haim Goren is the Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv. A teacher by profession, Haim has served as a member of the Tel Aviv city council for the past decade. Haim is the Chairman of the Ma’aminim Party. His duties in the municipality include responsibility for the city’s security, religious education, Jewish culture and the Olim absorption. Haim lives in the Shapira neighborhood in the south of the city with his wife Efrat and his five wonderful children.

About Our Organization: Tribe Tel Aviv

We believe Jewish tradition and wisdom can inform and enrich our fast-paced lives, and enhance our role in contributing to Tel Aviv’s Jewish character and to the building of Israel as a Jewish state. Be part of the flourishing of Jewish life in Tel Aviv and a revitalization of the Zionist enterprise. Tribe Tel Aviv’s mission is to take the next step forward and cultivate the existing and diverse community of English-speakers into a more cohesive community centered around Jewish life, because after all, Judaism is a team sport.
