On the occasion of director Daniel Rohr’s short visit to Israel, we are pleased to invite you to a special screening and discussion event of his Oscar-winning film for 2022 – ‘Navalni’.

Rohr is an honored guest of JFI – Jacobs Film Institute, and as part of his stay in Israel he will conduct a 3-day artist workshop > jacobsfilm.org

After the screening of the film, there will be a conversation with the director moderated by creator Tal Barda.

Summary:
Alexei Navalny’s story is probably far from over. He is convinced that one day he will be able to oust Putin and take his place as president, and Putin, some say, is afraid of him, otherwise how could he refuse to say his name? Navalny, who recovered from nerve gas poisoning that nearly cost him his life, is determined to prove that this was an assassination attempt carried out on Putin’s direct orders. The film follows Navalny, his wife Yulia and a team of investigators in the hideout where he recovered in Germany, while they dive into an investigation that leads them to dark and surprising places. The plot twists and turns so much that at times it is hard to remember that this is a glimpse into reality – in Russia, and other so-called democracies – and not a thriller, and that Shanbalani, so charismatic, is not a fictional hero but an opponent of a flesh-and-blood regime.

תקציר:
הסיפור של אלכסיי נבלני רחוק, כנראה, מלהסתיים. הוא משוכנע שיום אחד יצליח להדיח את פוטין ולתפוס את מקומו כנשיא, ופוטין, יש אומרים, פוחד ממנו, אחרת איך ייתכן שהוא מסרב לבטא את שמו? נבלני, שהחלים מהרעלה בגז עצבים שכמעט עלתה בחייו, נחוש להוכיח שמדובר בניסיון התנקשות שבוצע בהוראה ישירה של פוטין. הסרט מלווה את נבלני, רעייתו יוליה וצוות תחקירנים בבית המסתור שבו התאושש בגרמניה, בזמן שאלה צוללים לתחקיר המוביל אותם למקומות אפלים ומפתיעים. העלילה מסתחררת כל כך, שלרגעים קשה לזכור שמדובר בהצצה למציאות – ברוסיה, ובדמוקרטיות-לכאורה אחרות – ולא במותחן, ושנבלני, הכריזמטי כל כך, אינו גיבור בדיוני אלא מתנגד משטר בשר ודם.
