Off Screen celebrates 25 years of “Magnolia”, Paul Thomas Anderson’s magnum opus with a special screening in 35 mm film.

“Magnolia” dives into the complicated lives of a few stray souls in California’s San Fernando Valley. Following Robert Altman, Anderson connects different characters in overwhelming and fateful encounters and reveals the hidden connections between different and separate lives. Among the characters in the film are a male and sleazy motivational guru (Tom Cruise), a dying TV producer and the nursing brother who takes care of him (Philip Seymour Hoffman), his tormented ex-wife (Julianne Moore), and a child star who became a depressed adult (William H. Macy). The exciting acting performances are supported by the constant hovering of the camera, the comforting soundtrack, and the computer work of the editing, with Anderson’s confident hand guiding above all. The result is an ambitious and one-of-a-kind psychological drama, by one of the greatest American directors of our time.

״מגנוליה״ צולל אל חייהן הסבוכים של כמה נפשות תועות בעמק סן פרננדו שבקליפורניה. בעקבותיו של רוברט אלטמן, אנדרסון מחבר בין דמויות שונות במפגשים מציפים וגורליים וחושף את הקשרים הסמויים בין חיים שונים ונפרדים. בין הדמויות בסרט גורו מוטיבציה גברי וסליזי (טום קרוז), מפיק טלוויזיה גוסס והאח הסיעודי שמטפל בו (פיליפ סימור הופמן), גרושתו המיוסרת (ג׳וליאן מור), וילד כוכב שעשוענים שהפך למבוגר מדוכא (ויליאם ה. מייסי). הופעות המשחק המרגשות נתמכות בידי הריחוף המתמיד של המצלמה, הפסקול המנחם, ומלאכת המחשבת של העריכה, כשמעל הכל מנווטת היד הבוטחת של אנדרסון. התוצאה היא דרמה פסיכולוגית שאפתנית ויחידה במינה, של אחד מגדולי הבמאים האמריקאים בני זמננו.
