Abraham Gallery is proud to present “Beaten Beast”, a captivating and thought-provoking photographic project, collaboration between fashion photographer Amit Selickter and actor Chancela Mongoza.

An angel falls from above, descending to the lowest point on Earth as an injured creature surrounded by predators. This is the scene that accompanies Chancela Mongoza, an Israeli actor of Congolese origin who has been living in Israel since the age of five. In Mongoza’s eyes, the angel represents every Black man or woman, while the landing spot signifies Western society’s hostility towards them due to their intrinsic identity.

In 2020, Mongoza, together with Israeli photographer Amit Selickter, embarked on a photography project in the Dead Sea, a place layered with profound meanings in the Israeli context. On one hand, it symbolizes national pride as a unique wonder of the world that attracts many. On the other hand, the Dead Sea is receding, neglected, a relic of its former treasures. Human activity has led to a decline in water levels, dangerous sinkholes have emerged nearby, and its days as a premier tourist attraction are fading away. As reflected in the photographs, it’s a place of both beauty and anguish.

The artists’ journey culminated in a series of photographs, in which Mongoza’s persona emerges from the clarity and tranquility of the Dead Sea’s water, ascending to the harshness of the arid land under the blinding sun, and ultimately concluding its journey as a bruised beast within a dry field. Each of the creators is actively engaged behind and in front of the camera, together creating a fascinating intersection of photography, fashion and performance, which provokes thought about the conflict between identity and place.
