Hezi Cohen Gallery is pleased to present “Brown Eyes Darling”, a new solo exhibition by the artist Khen Shish.

On large canvases, with body gestures, with her hands, with her fingers, with a brush, or directly from the paint tube, the artist Khen Shish presents a flamboyant, overflowing, multi-layered painting. With the skill of a chameleon, she ranges between expressive, physical, sensual and stormy painting, and between almost meditative, conceptual, sketchy, very limited painting. The color range of black-white-pink-gold, so associated with marble, opens and expands in the current exhibition to a pictorial show on tall columns.
With three decades of painting behind her, it seems that the color came to her of its own accord with the opening of the scale, and beside her, she continues to establish a visual lexicon that has become her handwriting and her pictorial language – the language of marble.
Giant jugs that carry a pictorial scene on their bodies can be read as a monologue, a fragment of the artist’s private mythology.
Inverted, connected boats that also resemble eyes, a crying swan, a black foal, a stoned owl, a street cat whose lips are smeared with red lipstick and a wooden lion with brown, spotted eyes, are some of the images that are invited to take part in the marble showcase.
In the current exhibition, fundamental questions arise about the act of painting itself. What is the source of his power, what is his language. What spirit drives the space between the painting, the painter and the viewer. Between the abstract and the concrete, the poetic, the expressive. Shish is featured in a painting of herself, sometimes she is a sun and sometimes she is one star alone.

בבדים גדולים, במחוות גוף, עם הידיים, באצבעות, במכחול או ישירות משפופרת הצבע, מציגה האמנית חן שיש ציור ראוותן־רעבתן, גדוש, מרובה שכבות. במיומנות של זיקית היא נעה בין ציור אקספרסיבי, גופני, חושני וסוער, ובין ציור כמעט מדיטטיבי, מושגי, רישומי, מצומצם מאוד. המנעד הצבעוני של שחור־לבן־ורוד־זהב, המזוהה כל־כך עם שיש, נפתח ומתרחב בתערוכה הנוכחית למופע ציורי על טורים גבוהים.
כשמאחוריה שלושה עשורים של ציור, נראה שהצבע בא אליה מרצונו עם פתיחת הסקאלה, ולצידה, שיש ממשיכה לבסס לקסיקון חזותי שהפך לכתב ידה ולשפתה הציורית – שפת השיש.
כדי־ענק שנושאים על גופם סצינה ציורית יכולים להיקרא כמונולוג, שבר מן המיתולוגיה הפרטית של האמנית.
סירות הפוכות, מחוברות שנדמות גם כעיניים,ברבורה בוכה, סייח שחור, ינשוף מסטול, חתולת רחוב ששפתיה מרוחות בליפסטיק אדום ואריה־עץ בעל עיניים חומות, מנומרות, הם חלק מהדימויים שמזומנים לקחת חלק במופע הראווה של שיש.
בתערוכה הנוכחית עולות שאלות מהותיות על מעשה הציור עצמו. מה מקור כוחו, מה היא שפתו. איזה רוח מניעה את הרווח בין הציור, הציירת והצופה. בין המופשט לקונקרטי, לפואטי, לאקספרסיבי. שיש מתארחת בציור של עצמה, לפעמים היא שמש ולפעמים היא כוכב אחד לבד.
