“Joyland”, Pakistan’s representative for Oscars 2023, has deservedly won the Jury Prize
in Un Certain Regard and the Queer Palm Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. It also won the Best Film Award at the 2022 Gay Film Festival.
At the center of Saim Sadiq’s impressive debut film is a traditional Pakistani family that confronts an unusual conflict when their son begins to perform in a folk dance performance with a transgender dancer. The quiet and unemployed Haider Rana (Ali Junjo), who is married to a woman who actually works – Mumtaz (Rusty Farooq), apparently lives in a happy marriage and an arranged family life. The two live under the same roof with the rest of the Rana clan. Under pressure from his father, Haider finds work as a backup dancer for Biba (Alina Khan), a transgender who participates in a colorful entertainment show called Joyland. Through Biba, Haider slowly manages to open his heart and discover a different way of life. As Hyder comes into his own, Momtaz becomes frustrated with conservative society’s expectations that she stay home and serve the clan chief. “Joyland” is a bittersweet story about repressed desire and the quest for self-fulfillment.
