Riley’s most famous work is In C. It was written exactly 60 years ago. It is made up of fifty-three melodic patterns that are played in sequence, with each player having the freedom to choose how many times to repeat each pattern before moving on to the next pattern.
In the interpretation of the piece, each player is like an engine, which plays its own rhythm. Gradually, through deep listening, the audience becomes aware of this music’s paradoxical nature: the patterns performed by the individual musicians are quite different from those which result from their combinations. In fact, the ensemble’s super pattern is in itself not played and exists only as an illusionary outline – audible but not played.

About Terry Riley: an American composer and performer who is considered one of the pioneers of minimalism in Western classical music. His work was influenced by jazz and Indian classical music. His best-known works are In C from 1964 and the album A Rainbow in Curved Air from 1969, which are considered milestones in minimalist music.

היצירה בנויה מחמישים ושלוש תבניות מלודיות שמנוגנות ברצף כאשר לכל נגן/ית יש את החופש לבחור כמה פעמים לחזור על כל תבנית לפני שממשיכ/ה הלאה לתבנית הבאה.
בביצוע היצירה כל נגן/ית הוא/היא כמו מנוע, שמניע מקצב משלו/ה. בהדרגה, דרך האזנה עמוקה, הקהל נעשה מודע לטבעה הפרדוקסלי של המוזיקה הזו: התבניות שמנגנים/ות המוזיקאים/יות הבודדים/ות שונים בתכלית מאלה הנובעות משילוביהם/ן. למעשה, תבנית העל של האנסמבל כשלעצמה אינה מנוגנת כלל, ומתקיימת רק במכלול, כקו מתאר עדין, כמעט דמיוני – נשמע אך לא מנוגן.
