Michal Niv, a ceramist and industrial designer, returned to Israel about three years ago after a long stay abroad. The changing landscape, the multiple constructions, the public tone, the social and political crisis, made the reunion complex , painful and loaded.

About a hundred blue sculptures presented in the exhibition were born out of this meeting. They are the product of prolonged observation, absorption, assimilation, digestion and search for form. The sculptures – funny and compassionate at the same time – reveal the different and contradictory layers of the Israeli landscape and social archaeology. They bear traces of ancient figurines, imprinted with archeological, historical and Zionist constitutive archetypes. Using a strict language of wheel work and manual construction, Michal presents a collective that was created, grew and developed from an inner experience that cannot be separated from the events of time and the spirit of the era.

“First person plural” is a distinct linguistic sign of the Zionist literature of the Palmach generation, from which we inherited the sanctity of the collective. But “first person plural” is also a contradiction, a desire to belong and a failure at the same time. The group dynamics that the sculptures maintain in the gallery space is attractive and disturbing, and stimulating Ask us also who we are, who observe them as in a mirror.

מיכל ניב, קרמיקאית ומעצבת תעשייתית, חזרה לפני כשלוש שנים לארץ אחרי שהות ארוכה בחו”ל. הפרידה והחזרה בתקופת הקורונה הפכו אותה, בת הגליל, למעט זרה. השתנות הנוף, הבנייה המרובה, הטון הציבורי, המשבר החברתי והמדיני, הפכו את המפגש המחודש למורכב, כואב וטעון.

כמאה פסלים כחולים המוצגים בתערוכה נולדו מתוך המפגש הזה. הם תוצר של התבוננות ממושכת, ספיגה, הטמעה, עיכול וחיפוש צורה. הפסלים – מצחיקים ומעוררי חמלה כאחת – חושפים את השכבות השונות והסותרות של הנוף הישראלי ושל הארכיאולוגיה החברתית. הם נושאים עקבות של צלמיות קדמוניות, מוטבעים בארכיטיפיים ארכיאולוגיים, היסטוריים וציוניים מכוננים. באמצעות שפה קפדנית של עבודת גלגל ובנייה ידנית מיכל מציגה קולקטיב שנברא, צמח והתפתח מתוך חוויה פנימית שלא ניתן להפריד ממאורעות הזמן ומרוח התקופה.

“גוף ראשון רבים” הוא סימן לשוני מובהק של הספרות הציונית של דור הפלמ”ח, שממנו ירשנו את קדושת הקולקטיב. אבל “גוף ראשון רבים” הוא גם סתירה, רצון להשתייך וכישלון גם יחד. הדינמיקה הקבוצתית שהפסלים מקיימים בחלל הגלריה מושכת ומטרידה, ומעוררת אותנו לשאול גם מי אנחנו, המתבוננים בהם כמו במראה.
