They treated her as someone who offered grandmother remedies to solve a problem that needed a single-scalpel surgeon, but Jane Jacobs knew something about life in the city that none of the city planners knew. The men then dominated the drawing tables and the bulldozers, and Jacobs (from “The Life and Death of Big American Cities”) wandered through the streets and knew that a city was a living, breathing creature composed of people and noise and noise, creating an unmanageable character. Jacobs’ mighty struggle, an activist against her will, the wealthy, is the struggle of slum dwellers against blind architects led by a classic evil. Who actually won? And how did other big gates in the world not yet learn a lesson?
