Conway’s law states that the structure of an organization determines, to a large extent, the design of the system the organization produces. In general, it implies components are owned by teams, and the interfaces between components are maintained between the teams.

However, most implementations of the agile development methodology recommend that delivery teams include people who can control the delivery end to end, meaning that the team can implement changes to all required components of the system in order to ensure delivery.

In the first part of this talk, we will present those two forces that influence every product delivery organization, and review the nature and direction of each one, revealing the inevitable gap between them. In the second part, we will review methods to bridge this gap, as reflected in the culture of known technology organizations.
