Bombino

Sultan of Guitars from Sahara and nominated for the Grammy Award on the way to a performance in Israel, Barby 21.5.

Mozata says Bombino, the musical prodigy from the Sahara Desert, is considered one of the best guitarists in the world, and musicians such as Keith Richards, Robert Plant and Josh Homi admire him. Bombino is coming to Israel with Deran, the Grammy Award for Best Music in the World.

Bombino’s music is based on desert blues with the influences of African tribal music combined with American rock. When he was 11 years old, he discovered the guitar, while he and his Tuareg family had migrated in the wake of rebellion and conflict between the tribe and the state. He taught himself to play alone by listening to tapes by Ali Farka Toure, Jimi Hendrix, and Dire Straits. In time he became known as the Hendricks of the Sahel in Africa and was also a tour guide in the area. In 2006, he accompanied Angelina Jolie as a counselor for about a week in Niger. Between 2007 and 2010 the Tuareg rebellion broke out and some members of Bombino’s band were kidnapped and apparently murdered, because their tracks disappeared. The government also confiscated musical instruments, especially guitars, which he saw as defiance of the regime. That is why Bombino was forced to leave his home again.

A demo tape he was preparing at the time came into the hands of an American film producer who persuaded him to seriously record his music, and in 2011 Agadez created his breakthrough across Africa. The album reached the top of the iTunes World charts and attracted the attention of the audience and of many musicians like Dan Orbach of the Black Keys.
