A-Genre Festival: Operating Instructions | Thursday to Saturday, 25-27.11
In the age of endless information there seems to be an operating manual for almost everything. We get operating instructions on how to assemble furniture bought at IKEA, repair our computer, download videos from social networks and this is just the beginning. We seem to have operating instructions for almost everything. We operate and are activated at any given moment.
Which route to take? How to operate the devices used by us? How to assemble parts of a product? How to fix something? How not to break it?
The familiar How To mechanism is just a metaphor for the way our lives are run and managed. Operating instructions have long been of interest to performance artists. In the 1960s a wave of works according to operating instructions was a matter of routine, Yoko Ono, John Cage and many others took the format of operating instructions and melted it into the avant-garde art field.
The digital age and with it YouTube and Wiki How bring a new wave of operating instructions – what does it tell us about us? To what extent do we depend on operating instructions? Can we run alone? Are there operating instructions that are already invisible to the eye that activate us and how much do we activate the other?
