This exhibition features works by groups of photographers who participated in Sagit Zluf Namir’s master class “Body-Object-Portrait”. Each group underwent a yearlong process of exploring their physical, mental, environmental and photographic body, while creating a body of work from which the images for this exhibition were selected.
The exhibition touches on the liminal space of fantasy – a space which exists somewhere between reality and delusion; A space in which we wholly believe in the fantasy and yet recognize that it is not real; a space which engages concrete reality while stretching it to its limits. The familiar becomes foreign, is divorced from its context and alters its function.
The participating photographers explored their world through their own desires, wishes, fears and pains, while employing the camera as a private and cultural research tool which confronts the gap between fantasy and reality, between convention and heresy, between the standard and its deviation. The works range from remnants of unseen events to autobiographical and environmental observation, resulting in hybrids which tempt the viewer into a momentary belief in fantasy, in the photographic image. We question whether the image needs to truly exist, or whether the possibility of its existence is enough – in the vein of Descartes’ concept of the “evil demon”, which leads us to question all senses, to fully believe that what we see is what is while knowing that is not the case at all.
