On Wednesday, April 7, the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, we will screen the documentary film “Pizza in Auschwitz” at Shapira Cafe, followed by an open conversation with one of the filmmakers (details below).
Danny Hanoch, a Holocaust survivor, testifies that he holds a BA degree (a graduate of Auschwitz), and that he had a personal doctor – Dr. Mengele – treat him. The tall man who never cries has already joined every possible delegation to Poland. The extermination camps failed, until this film, in one thing: to take his children to the districts of his lost childhood in Lithuania.
His children, Sagi (40) and Miri (38), who have suffered from Holocaust overdoses every day of their lives, are not eager to join him on this journey, which begins with a happy childhood and ends with the Holocaust. Or as Miri says in the film, “We prefer not to look the Holocaust in the eye.”
When director Moshe Zimmerman, a second-generation man himself, enters the picture, the film begins. The children are convinced and the group embarks on an extraordinary journey along the path that Danny went through as a child, culminating in a stormy night in Danny’s original hut in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Just before boarding the plane, Danny informs his children “Don’t worry, the bunks in Birkenau are orthopedic!”
Three people with a camera crew, six days in one van, cross ‘that’ Europe through all the camps where Danny spent, to finally get to his hut in Birkenau and spend the night there.
Around a pizza triangle that Miri brings to her father lying on the bunk in a hut in Birkenau, the three arrive – Danny, Sagi and Miri, for an inevitable explosion, full of pain and black humor. A new perspective from the second generation and a Holocaust survivor is revealed in “Pizza in Auschwitz”.

A documentary in Shapira has been opening every Wednesday at Cafe Shapira for almost 5 years. Every Wednesday we screen an Israeli documentary and after that we have an open conversation between the creators and the audience.
The project operates without funding, and on a voluntary basis by the staff and all the creators, to allow the films to go outside the cinemas and reach anyone who wants to.
This community-social cinema manages to remain open and enabling thanks to your support, which is especially important at this time when the creators have lost much of their livelihoods and we want them to continue to come to us despite the situation.

ברביעי, 7.4, ערב יום השואה, נקרין בדוקומנטרי בשפירא את הסרט “פיצה באושוויץ”, ואחריו תתקיים שיחה פתוחה עם אחד מיוצרי הסרט (פרטים בהמשך).
דני חנוך, ניצול שואה, מעיד על עצמו שהוא בעל תואר בי-איי (בוגר אושוויץ), ושהיה לו רופא אישי שטיפל בו – ד’ר מנגלה. האיש הגבוה, שלעולם לא בוכה, כבר הצטרף לכל משלחת אפשרית לפולין ולמחנות ההשמדה לא הצליח, עד הסרט הזה, בדבר אחד: לקחת את ילדיו, שגי ומירי, אל מחוזות ילדותו האבודה בליטא.
הילדים שלו, שגי (40) ומירי (38), שספגו מנות יתר של שואה כל יום בחייהם לא משתוקקים להצטרף אליו למסע הזה, שתחילתו ילדות מאושרת וסופו שואה. או כמו שאומרת מירי בסרט: ‘אנחנו מעדיפים לא להסתכל לשואה בעיניים.’
כשהבמאי משה צימרמן, דור שני בעצמו, נכנס לתמונה, מתחיל הסרט. הילדים משתכנעים והחבורה יוצאת למסע יוצא דופן במסלול אותו עבר דני בילדותו, ששיאו לילה סוער בצריף המקורי של דני באושוויץ-בירקנאו.
רגע לפני שעולים למטוס, דני מודיע לילדיו ‘אל דאגה, הדרגשים בבירקנאו אורטופדיים!’.
שלושה אנשים עם צוות צילום, ששה ימים, בתוך וואן אחד, חוצים את אירופה ‘ההיא’, דרך כל המחנות בהם דני ‘בילה’, כדי להגיע לבסוף אל הצריף שלו בבירקנאו ולהעביר בו את הלילה.
סביב משולש פיצה שמביאה מירי לאביה השוכב על הדרגש בצריף בבירקנאו מגיעים השלושה – דני, שגי ומירי לפיצוץ בלתי נמנע, מלא כאב והומור שחור.
ב’פיצה באושוויץ’ נחשפת נקודת מבט חדשה על הדור השני, ניצול שואה אף הוא.

דוקומנטרי בשפירא נפתח בכל רביעי בקפה שפירא כבר כמעט 5 שנים. בכל רביעי אנחנו מקרינים סרט דוקומנטרי ישראלי ואחריו מקימים שיחה פתוחה בין היוצרים לקהל.
הפרוייקט פועל ללא מימון, ובהתנדבות של הצוות ושל כלל היוצרים, כדי לאפשר לסרטים לצאת אל מחוץ לבתי הקולנוע ולהגיע לכל מי שחפץ בכך.
הקולנוע הקהילתי-חברתי הזה מצליח להישאר פתוח ומאפשר בזכות התמיכה שלכם, שחשובה במיוחד בתקופה הזאת שבה היוצרים איבדו הרבה ממקורות הפרנסה שלהם ואנחנו רוצים שהם ימשיכו להגיע אלינו למרות המצב.
