Popkan’s journey to the summit began in the Jamaican town of Portmore, where he grew up and passed his childhood. Sutherland fell in love with music at the age of seven and swore to become one of the biggest and most loved names in the industry. The promising singer fulfilled his ambitious childhood dream in 2007 when he hooked up with the icon of the dancehall and Yves Cartel, who became his mentor and producer. Thanks to the huge push from Jamaican reggae legend, Popkan’s career has gained momentum and is on the way. Sutherland took the enormous opportunity given to him with both hands and took full advantage of the doors opened to him and the stage he received. A cartel that took him under his wing introduced Popkan in all the best-known and biggest events in the reggae scene such as STING and SUMFEST. His original and unique electronic dancehall style appealed to the fans, and with the help of the influential producer NOTNICE, Popkan became a greasy hit machine that never looked back. Singles were a huge success and were played nonstop in Jamaica radio stations, which spurred the DJ’s stock and the beginner creator who became a familiar name and loved in his home country. But, the truly great breakthrough of Popcan came in 2010, when he collaborated with the successful cartoon cart “CLARKS”. The masterpiece burned the leading marches and put Sutherland on the map. He gained a loyal loyal audience and became a famous and sought-after artist. The growing recognition was also reflected in his prize cupboard, which began to fill with a dizzying pace. In 2011, Popkan won three awards in the Music and Entertainment Excellence Awards in categories – Breakthrough of the Year, Collaboration of the Year (for CLARKS, and Dancehall Song of the Year).
Popkan did not stop for a moment and in 2012, he released the “CHROMATIC PRESENTS YIY CHANGE” mixtape, which presented the world with the successful single “MAN SHE WANT”. This is the first song by Popkan that enters the HBO HIP HOP parade of the Billboard parade, taking the 89th place. The single won even a remix of the famous star Basta Reims. In addition to the time he spent in the recording studio, Popkan captured the stages of some of the world’s leading music venues, launching his tour in Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. After indulging his many fans in unforgettable live performances all over the globe, he launched a video recording for his single “UNRULY RAVE”. Nico, the official director of the famous OCTOBER’S VERY OWN label, was charged with filming the video.
