The GRA Center is proud to invite you to watch the contemporary South Tel Aviv drag scene in an exhibition of photographs The local drag scene and the culture that has been created around it inspire this document to stand for one weekend in the entrance of the GRA Center in Neve Sha’anan.

The focus of the photographs is behind the scenes of drag performances, winking at the glorious tradition of glamor photography in Queer culture. The project provides a glimpse into a living and kicking alternative community, and aesthetics that is ugliness and beauty in one breath. There are art beneath the surface, the margins of human space thrive creativity. This beauty can not be imitated, you can hardly take pictures. This exhibition is only a part that has been allowed out of the monstrous circulation of drag shows and their audience.

Ben Shabat, born in 1985, lives and works in Tel Aviv. She has a MA degree in gender from Tel Aviv University. Ben Shabat chooses to work in photography after performing performance and took part in a large number of photography and video works done in local art during these years (with Tal Shohat, Tal Givoni, Dan Balilty, Lilach Madar and many more). Today, Ben Shabat presents in her photographs an ambivalent view of marginal cultures, external to them and identifies them, yearns for them.
