“The People of Babylon” is an exhibition of a collection of illustrations made with a quick look at the people who come to spend time in the Bar of Babylon. Every week, for 5-6 weeks, I would come to the bar, sit in different places, watch, and illustrate people who for some reason caught my eye. Something in their presence, facial expression or movement they did caught my attention, and without asking permission and without saying anything, I would illustrate them.
I tried to listen a little to conversations and tones, and to get caught up in a word I heard or imagined, and that word represented the atmosphere, the initial, quick and superficial impression I got from that / that person.
At the end of each illustration I approached the person I illustrated and gave my illustration as a gift. So the original illustrations are with them and the illustrations in the exhibition are scans of the original photographs that I have digitally processed.
What interested me in the project is my way of trying to figure out how to capture the character and personality of a person I do not know at all, and to put them as a character into the style of my illustration world. Another thing that happened, and even more interesting, was getting the response from the same person who received the illustration. The reactions were mostly positive and surprised but also sometimes there were reactions of panic, misunderstanding, contempt and even offended.
The exhibition will feature over 60 illustrations of the Babylonians, in addition I have created laden illustrations of all the Babylonians together to convey the sense of clutter and turnover of the people there in the nightlife.
