M.ART presents a musical performance SOS (The Song of Songs): a stage cantata for 14 voices, 2 readers, percussion and a telegraph key. At the core of the libretto lay 3 texts: Solomon’s “Song of Songs,” which hails from the canonic Old Testament, and serves as the key to the piece’s abbreviation; the letters of Ancient Roman magistrate, writer, and lawyer Pliny the Younger (63-113 CE), as well as the diaries of the creators of the performance.
Poetic love texts from the “Song of Songs” are interwoven with the distressed sentiments prevalent in modern society, and with the eyewitness accounts of catastrophes—from the journalists of major news-sources, to an 18-year-old boy from the beginning of our era (Pliny the Younger’s age when he witnessed the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, the destruction of Pompeii, and the death his uncle—prolific ancient Roman scholar, and writer, Pliny the Elder).
SOS: the worldwide standard Morse code signal of distress used in radiotelegraphic communication. The signal consists of three dots, followed by three dashes and then three more dots.
