M.ART presents a concert of chamber music by Leonid Desyatnikov, one of the most celebrated and widely performed Russian contemporary composers.

Desyatnikov’s musical ideas tap into the Russian classical tradition. The melodic developments of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky proved to be more important for the composer than the bold advances of the XX century avant-garde. Desyatnikov’s style, delicate, subtle and infused with wittiness and irony is very much of our time. Precise rhythmic structures make his music inspiring material for choreographers – Alexey Ratmansky staged five ballets on Desyatnikov’s scores.

The recital programme features Desyatnikov’s chamber pieces composed in various years — starting from his landmark ‘Sketches to Sunset’, a mix of tango and klezmer music written in the early 1990s, up to ‘Songs of Bukovina’, a new piece loosely based on Ukrainian folk songs premiered in 2017.

The programme will be performed by an ensemble of brilliant Russian musicians led by the champion of Desyatnikov’s music pianist Alexey Goribol.
