LUNA by Ramon Esquivel, is the tale of the moon (Luna) and her good friend Soledad. Soledad is the daughter of migrant farm workers. Because they never stay in one place very long, her only friend is the moon, but Soledad dreams of more. With the advice and encouragement of Luna, Soledad finds that she’s just got to take a little risk, and is able to make not one, but two new friends! When this new development clashes with the way her family has organized their life following the work and harvests, only Luna can guess what will happen.
LUNA is a play about family, about friendship, and the ways in which our differences are what make us most like one another. Everyone can relate to that experience of being different, of feeling left out and finding a way in. LUNA is a perfect story for English-speaking audiences in Israel, who also experience the sort of uprootedness, cultural-difference, and loneliness that Soledad and her family do–and it provides a clear map for those children about how to navigate that experience.
