The second meeting of the experimental film club, focuses on different practises of fiction, metafiction and autofiction. The films presented in the program, draw an intricate mixture of critical approaches to fiction-making, filmmaking and media as a whole. They question exciting and also problematised concepts of representation, authorship, perspective, violence and sexuality. Carrying on the film club’s inquiry after new forms of image-making, this program aims to ponder notions of story-telling; offering the critique of narrative within a narrative.

FASHIONS | KEREN CYTTER | 2020 | 30 min
The video follows three women living in a prototypically bourgeois German apartment: a young woman who nurses a crush on her stylish neighbour; her mother, a busy cook at a cafeteria; and her unemployed and submissive grandmother. In the beginning she watches a rather unsettling TV program with her grandchild, in which a young man demonstrates strangling techniques as a workout routine set to an easy-listening electro soundtrack. The passive grandmother, a โ€žburdenโ€œ to the other two, is first exiled to the basement, before her grandchild sells her off to be the new subject to be strangled in the exercise program. Without the specific context of the institution and its focus on the memorialization of historical Nazi-terror, Cytterโ€™s piece opens up to a more complex reading. It frames the rise of rightโ€“wing ideologies as less of an irrational turn, but a direct effect and continuation of a neoliberal agenda, that reduces individuals to bodies with an exchangeable value. If her sweet video connects fascism with fashion, itโ€™s not about the high-end but the mainstream โ€œputting the train to Auschwitz back on its tracks,โ€ this time far beyond Germany and its history, but everywhere and every day.

MOTHER OF ALL FICTIONS | WALTER SOLON | 2019 | 30 min
Mother of All Fictions is the story of a failed film project. South American filmmaker Walter Solon travels to Los Angeles. His goal is to write a feature film based on the biography and mythology around his great aunt Lina Mosebach. Lina had migrated to Los Angeles after surviving the Holocaust and spending her teenage years with Walterโ€™s great grandparents in South America. The family myth holds that Lina went to become a CIA screenwriter and film theorist, therefore cutting all contact with her family in South America. Walter tries to track down his great aunt (who might be still alive), while working on a script, casting and location scouting for a “feminist biopic” about Lina. As new gaps of representation emerge and personal connections are made, the impossibility of a faithful rendering of his propagandist aunt become more and more acute. While Walterโ€™s plan of joining an LA film school and making the film might never materialize, what we watch is a recollection of that time, years later, using fragments of location scouting and casting material to tell the story of an unfulfilled project. Fail again, fail better.

I FOUND MANNA AND I ATE IT | SOPHIE LEE | 2018 | 10 min
โ€˜I found manna and I ate itโ€™ centres loosely on the medieval mystic and polymath Hildegard von Bingen. A series of tableaux vivant depicting Hildegard and her companions is intercut with footage of a night in London, in which we follow a group of female friends across the city as the evening unravels. The work investigates ideas around desire and female sociality, as well as connections between music, spirituality and states of ecstasy.
