Sun 8 December 2019 | 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm
Kuli Alma - Mikve Yisrael 10, Tel Aviv,

Last September, Daniel Johnston beat the Devil.

This is not a tribute night. It is a night of celebration and sorrow entwined over Daniel Johnston’s legacy: Art through which listeners can see and feel a beating heart, a haunted mind. Johnston recorded raw songs with extraordinary sincerity, portraying his unrequited love, loneliness and struggle with mental illness. Using a simple cassette-recorder in his parents’ basement he was–if unintentionally—a Lo-Fi pioneer.
Daniel Johnston’s music was a commercial failure and an inspirational success. Though he never made it into the mainstream, many well-known musicians–including David Bowie, Tom Waits, The Eels, Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips–credited him as a creative influence.
His art turned music aficionados into Daniel Johnston aficionados, owing to the way he redefined the role that music plays in our lives.

All of us involved in tonight’s event–musicians, artists, the Kuli Ama crew and our producers–have been deeply influenced by Daniel’s music. True love brought us together, and true love will find us all, in the end.
