Tel Aviv Museum of Art - Shaul HaMelech 27, Tel Aviv,

The exhibition “Code vs Code” explores the operation of constraints and limitations that artists choose to impose upon themselves as part of their artistic practice. The nine participating artists precede their work with simple, clear-cut ground rules pertaining to the qualities of the medium. These rules restrict their expression, dictating and shaping their modus operandi. The work and its outcomes are reflected in one another as in a hall of mirrors. At the same time, subordination to the medium’s constraints liberates them from conventions, such as art’s perception as a channel of personal expression and its definition as a unique handwriting which guides articulation. The constraint allows the artist to evade the traps of fixation, convention, and the need to express.
