TLV Library - Sderot Sha'ul HaMelech 25, Tel Aviv,

On November 9, 1938, Kristallnacht riots took place in Nazi Germany. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, a period came to an end and a new era dawned for Germany and Europe. About two years earlier, director Wim Wenders’ fantastic film, set, as we know in retrospect in the last days of Berlin divided between East and West, was released.

The film tells the story of Mi’el and Casiel (Bruno Ganz and Otto Zander), a pair of angels who have been wandering for centuries across divided Berlin. Although they are invisible to the eyes of adults, they are occasionally revealed to the amazed eyes of innocent children. Each of them has an infinite willingness to listen to the cries of the residents of the city – cries of joy and pain, of sorrow and compassion. When Damiel falls in love with a beautiful trapezoidal spiral (Solvage Dumartan), he seeks to break the cycle, give up the wings of the angel and join the humans in their lives.

Questions about the meaning of human existence and a discussion of the notion that Germany is a victim of Allied policy after World War II are woven into a romantic fantasy that is considered one of the greatest magic acts in the history of cinema. The philosopher and poet, Dr. Noam Weissman will talk to us about the philosophical issues and ideas illustrated in the film, as well as his special cinematic qualities, and the aesthetic relationship that exists between them.

In the program:
19:30 – Lecture by Dr. Noam Weissman
20:00 – Screening of the film

+ The event will be held courtesy of the Goethe Institute
+ Admission to the event is free of charge and with advance registration according to the green label guidelines.
