Vered Aharonovitch is a Tel Avivian artist widely known for her inspiring, provocative, humorous installations. The emotional works are born from a combination of the artist’s private life and a look at social issues from the past and present which continue to conflict with her ideals.
Most recently, Aharonovitch presents a series of works—allegorical self portraits that invoke stories of female martyrs having their sensory organs removed in acts of religiosity at the hands of coercive males. Ahoronovitch places herself inside of her saintly alter-ego—and while the devoted figure is waiting for faith to consume her, disturbed eyes disclose the fact that the artist and the martyr whose identity she assumes will never reconcile their differences. In fact, it is the artist herself who aims to do the saving.
This series was a part of the group exhibition, Other Saints, at Dan Gallery in Tel Aviv. Among other prominent installations of by Aharonovitch include Art Class, which was featured in Munich, Germany, The Last Supper in Hanina Gallery and an exhibition in the Herziliya Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the winners exhibition for the young artist award.
