Bunny Chow

Bunny Chow

We thought that South African and Indian was a strange combo so we had to look into the origin of the Bunny Chow dish. As it turns out, it was created by Indians who lived in the highly Indian populated city of Durban, South Africa. It is a fast food dish consisting of a curry-filled bread pocket.

This stand in the shuk is owned by the South African-born Allon Sarkin. As if to make an already interesting dish more interesting, he decided to use challah as the bread. Does that now make it South African-Indian-Israeli? Allon prepares the stews early each morning and lets them slow cook for hours until the meat is soft and the flavours rich. The options are beef, chicken, and vegan and can all be served on rice instead of in the challah. The chicken option was our favourite!

This is definitely a quick, delicious, filling, and reasonably priced meal. Applause all round!
